The Kilties Come to Racine
Something that has always drawn a lot of interest from me is Drum Corps International (or DCI). I got attracted to DCI back in grade school when I started in band. General concept is that it is just brass instruments and the percussion that perform on both field show and in concert. The field shows are just amazing to watch. We have a few corps in Wisconsin such as the Madison Scouts, Pioneer, and the Racine Kilties.
My friend, Ryan Johnson, has long aged out of Pioneer, but is now living in Wausau with his wife and cats, and playing in the Racine Kilties. Ryan actually used to be the drum instructor in my old band, CYO, and that’s where I met him back in high school. Anyhow, The Kilties home show is coming up over July 4th weekend, so I highly suggest that if this at all interests you, to go check it out. The shows give me chills from watching them sometimes.
Here’s a picture of Ryan that was in the Racine Journal Times this past Sunday because they performed down at Harborfest. He’s the 5th guy from the left (and the tallest guy in the picture). What a stud.
everclear sucked at harborfest. but racine is magnificent. oreo lives in racine, so go see him when you have a chance.

Racine is NOT magnificent. Actually, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anything good about the armpit of the state. The only way it would be cool is by association because it shares borders with Kenosha and Milwaukee.

I can tell you from experiance that some of these dudes need to be put out to pasture…
for good. That photo makes us look like a HS band reunion for the class of ‘64. Yikes.
Nothing like some old timers trying to still march competive drum corps…
