Where is the US Olympic Baseball team?

Filed under: General — Tara @ 1:50 pm

Some of you have probably heard me ruminate about the Greek Olympics and what a joke I think it’s turning into. They are so unprepared, it’s sickening.

I also think it’s sad that American athletes either won’t compete or are scared to go over there, because they feel that with the current events of the world right now, being from the United States basically puts a big bulleye on their heads.

So. At least we have our US Olympic Baseball team to go and defend our Gold Medal that we won four years ago behind Milwaukee’s very own Ben Sheets, right? Baseball is “America’s Pastime,” right?

No.

The US Team were boners and lost to Mexico in qualifying and aren’t going to be in the Olympics. You know who is though?

The Greeks.

How funny is that. The IOC has a rule in place that gives a host country an exemption to participate in any sport they want to (they think that it will garner more local interest then), so the Greeks said, “why not?” What’s funny to me is that before they built the Olympic stadium in Greece for baseball, the country only had two fields (and the two fields were on military bases.) TOTAL. I have two baseball fields on my BLOCK.

So, how are the Greeks planning on putting together a competitive team? How else? Get players from a country that actually plays baseball. The United States. According to an article on JSOnline from back in May, the team is even being coached by a guy that lives in Hales Corners. This is pretty funny to me though:

…the team that will be called the Greek Olympic baseball team consists almost entirely of American players who can prove their grandparents or, in some cases, great-grandparents, came from Greece.

So basically, if you own My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding on DVD or if you are hairy, you can play on the Greek baseball team. Is this just really messed up to anyone else?

  2. Not enough guts to sign your name, huh Anonymous? And I warned you that it was still a “work in progress.”

What does your comment have to do with baseball anyway?
